With swine flu spreading like wild fire, researchers and scientists are fervently working on the swine flu vaccine. The swine flu is basically a condition caused by the influenza virus H1N1. This was first discovered in April 2009 somewhere in Mexico. The situation was declared as a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) in June 2009. This virus strain is a new mutated virus strain and involves specific strains from other viruses that relate to the swine, bird and human virus. It spreads typically through the air and therefore sneezing, cough and touch are the main means of transmission for this virus. The virus is also extremely tough and can survive up to 24 hours on cold hard surfaces.

The main symptoms of the swine influenza are similar to those of normal influenza and include fever, cough, cold, sneezes, headache, body pains and joint pains. However, one typical symptom that is different is the presence of nausea and vomiting. Due to the fact that the swine flu ha symptoms that are similar to those of the normal flu, diagnosis becomes difficult and is often delayed. Affected people consider their situation to be normal influenza and therefore resort to over the counter medicines without really going to a physician.

The swine flu epidemic has made people panic all over the world. Since the spread is through the air, the disease has spread extremely fast. Some countries have even quarantined travelers who have come from other infected areas so as to curb the spread of this disease. While there is a cure for the condition, the fact of the matter is that timely diagnosis is extremely important. If the diagnosis is done after 2 days of the symptoms manifesting themselves, there is a cause of concern.

There is a fair amount of effort that is underway to develop the vaccine for swine flu. However there is a certain procedure that needs to be followed and the same takes more than 9 months. The specific virus needs to be injected in animals and then developed so as to make sure that the vaccine works efficiently and well.

It is expected that the vaccine should be out by the month of September or October for public use this year. However, since these are initial stages of a much rushed project, the availability of the vaccine may be limited for a certain period of time. Needless to say there are other resources working towards a fast manufacture of the vaccine so that it can be made available to all. Even though this is being done there is a possibility that the vaccine will only be effective for this particular strain of virus. Given the rate at which the viruses mutate, there is no guarantee that viruses will not mutate again and come together to create an even newer virus that we may have to fight again. The swine flu vaccine, in that case will be ineffective and therefore we need to find new ways of developing vaccines faster.

Sleep apnea is a condition in which there is a decrease in the airflow that occurs during sleep. In some cases there is a cessation of breathing completely for a short period of time. Specifically speaking, apnea is claimed when there is a cessation for more than 10 seconds. While most people wake up during sleep when an apnea occurs, there are others who might move from a deep sleep to shallow sleep when there is lack of oxygen in the blood due to the breathing issue. A milder form of apnea is called hyponnea in which the reduction of breathing is much lower. There are two main types of apnea that a person can suffer from and both can be treated.

Sleep apnea treatment options that are not surgical are mainly behavioral changes, providing a continuous positive airway pressure, medication and dental appliances as well. It has been noticed that apnea occurs in specific sleeping positions and changes made to the positions can sometimes stop the condition from recurring completely. Obesity is another factor that contributes to apnea to a large extent. Weight loss and exercise can also help in reducing and slowly removing apnea altogether. Dental appliances are also kind of apnea treatments that involves appliances that hold the jaw and the tongue in specific positions so as to remove obstruction while breathing.

Obstructive sleep apnea can be cured easily with the use of the above mentioned dental appliances. However, medications are also used for treatment for this condition at times. These include nasal steroid sprays that help in removing nasal blocks in the airway. Other medicines that are used are nasal decongestants. These can also help in any inflammation that may braise in the nasal area. Among other medications, Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI) and tricyclic antidepressants have also been used for obstructive apnea. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is the process in which the airway is kept open so that it does not close.

There are other surgical treatments also available for apnea. These are generally chosen when non surgical options do not help and are mainly resorted to if the apnea is extremely severe. While a surgery promises a permanent cure and the process may seem easier than the regular everyday medications or appliances that need to be used, surgery obviously requires time off from work and normal life for a while. Some risks that are present during this surgery are bleeding, scars, problems in swallowing after the surgery and other regular surgical complications that may arise. Since the surgery is dependent on the specific anatomy of an individual each surgery has its own challenges that it brings along. However, the common surgeries that are performed are related to palate implants, tongue reduction, maxillomandibular procedures, hyoid suspension and other such surgeries for sleep apnea.

Kidney failure or renal failure is a problem that is commonly generated as a result of many other diseases, and because of the consumption of certain substances, there are different kinds or levels of this problem, however, both are triggered in the same way which we are going to explore later on in the article. This problem causes a person to increase in a not normal way the levels of certain fluids in a person’s body, these liquids will also contain several elements that should have been better diluted, and the excess of these elements in the human body is a dangerous problem that could make a person develop or worsen their health, prompting a person’s death. The categories in which a renal problem or failure could be cataloged are called: acute and chronic, the type or level of the problem is measured by the amount of serum creatinine in the patient’s body.

The acute renal failure is a problem that will rapidly shut down the correct functioning of the kidneys, and this is a problem which is mostly characterized by a decrease in the production of urine, some other of the renal failure symptoms in this stage or level are: body water and other bodily fluids disturbances, also electrolyte derangement. One common treatment for this condition is the use of dialysis which brings the problem to a better level in which it is easier or better to treat.

Then there is the chronic renal failure, there are 5 stages of this problem, which could develop slowly depending on every person. These different stages will be determined by the severity of the case, and as well by the amount of reduction the activity of the kidney does, therefore it is with this method that is recognizable how severe the end stage renal failure will become. You should know that stage number 1 is the stage in which the damage is less severe, and of course, the 5th stage is the most damaged stage in which a kidney could be.

Some of the causes of this renal failure are: sudden interruption of a sufficient blood supply to the kidneys resulting from a toxic overload of the kidneys, in some cases, this is the result of an accident or lack of a correct surgery procedure, like I stated before, a common cause for this problem is the excessive consumption of some drugs and alcohol, which will affect the kidney directly, within these drugs, it should be noted that the abuse of antibiotics does have the same effect on the kidneys, another cause, is those people who suffer from diabetes mellitus, as you know, there are many causes for a problem of this nature to develop, and what is mostly recommended is a yearly visit to the doctor for those people who might be most likely to suffer from this disease.

Leukemia is a type of cancer of the blood. The different kinds of blood cells develop from bone marrow and there are different functions that these cells perform. The white blood cells are part of the body’s immune system and fight germs. Red blood cells are basically oxygen carriers and carry oxygen to various parts of the body. The platelets help in forming blood clots when there is bleeding. These blood cells exist in the blood in a certain proportion and when the bone marrow starts to produce an abnormally large number of abnormal white blood cells, the condition occurs. These cancerous white blood cells are different from normal white blood cells and do not die when they should.

Chronic and acute leukemia are both extremely serious conditions. In the chronic case of blood cancer, the white blood cells can still perform immune system functions that the normal cells are expected to do. However, in an acute condition the white blood cells are incapable of performing any normal function of the white blood cells. Chronic leukemia lymphoma is a specific kind of condition where the lymphoid cells are affected. This condition does not affect children and mainly those above the age of 55 are affected. Other kinds are chronic myeloid, acute lymphcytic and acute myeloid.

Leukemia symptoms depend on the concentration of the abnormal white blood cells and the areas in which they exist. It is even possible that people who suffer from this condition may not show any signs of the disease at all. Some of the symptoms that have been mentioned prior to diagnosis are headaches, disorientation, vomiting, lack of muscle control and seizures. Since blood travels to all parts of the body, other organs can be affected and it is not uncommon to hear that the lungs, heart kidney and testes are affected with this problem.

Diagnosis of the condition involves various tests irrespective of whether the condition is that of acute or chorine leukemia. A physical examination where the doctor checks the lymph nodes, liver and spleen is the first step of a physician check up. Complete blood test that involve blood count are also done as a next step. If the condition exists, then there is likelihood of a larger than normal number of white blood cells to show up. A biopsy is another test that is conducted in which a small tissue is removed from the body so that cancer cells can be traced. In this case, a tissue for the biopsy is mainly taken from the bone marrow. The marrow is removed after a local anesthesia is given.

Treatment options for the condition involve chemotherapy, biological therapy, targeted therapy and radiation. The latest treatment option is the stem cell therapy. The specific choice of treatment depends on whether your condition is acute or chronic. It also depends on your age and whether cancer cells have been found in the cerebrospinal fluid. Those with an acute condition obviously need immediate attention and the treatment option target the removal of all cancer cells immediately. This is the process of remission that needs to be followed by other therapies that involve maintenance and prevention of a relapse. In leukemia that is chronic the doctor may actually decide to watch and wait for some time before prescribing a specific treatment.

An infectious disease is a condition that typically occurs from an external bacteria or virus that invades the body. These external elements are called pathogens and can also cause ailments in other species and animals. Since the pathogens can be passed on from the afflicted person to another, these are also called communicable diseases or contiguous diseases. There are various ways in which these transmittable diseases can be passed on from one individual to another. These include touch, water, air and food. Sometimes an understanding of how a disease transmits can help in actually treating the disease and also in stopping the spread of the problem to other people. For example, if you know that conjuntivitus is caused by touch, it is possible to maintain a distance from those who have the condition so as not to contract the disease. Some pathogens that are transmitted through air are therefore more difficult to control. Spread of diseases cause by them is more rampant.

It also depends on the longevity and survivability of the pathogen in specific conditions that causes the spread or halt of a communicable disease. With vaccinations that have been developed over the years, the pathogens also mutate in a manner that new strains of pathogens develop, creating a scenario where we today have various emerging infectious diseases that we have never seen before. The issue has reached such alarming extent that we now have transmittable disease specialist who continue to research the various strains of specific bacteria and viruses.

New infectious diseases can occur due to a combination of mutations that may occur. Predicting these mutations and understanding the strains of viruses that can surface in the future is difficult. The infectious diseases list is extremely long since a large number of conditions actually arise from external pathogens that invade the human body. While a large amount has been done on transmittable diseases that are known, there is little research that has been done conclusively on the kind of issues that the world is likely to face in the future. This is not to say that there is no research that is happening today on these issues but the fact that the scope is extremely large and requires billions of dollars for funding.

New communicable diseases sometimes tend to cerate a panic in the population. This is mainly because of the fact that people are not aware of the specific symptoms, causes and treatment options available. In most cases a new condition is detected only after a few cases have bee discovered and caused havoc. The lack of predictability of the manner in which these pathogens shall develop caused alarm among people when something like this occurs. However, an infectious disease there is also work being done to reduce the time that it takes in developing a new vaccination.

Genetic disorders, as we know, are caused by an abnormality in the gene or chromosome patterns in a human. There are some disorders that are caused mainly due to genetic issues and others that are caused due to a combination of genetic and environmental conditions. There are various kinds of disorders related to the genetic structure and are classified as single gene disorders and multifactorial or polygenic disorders. The single gene disorders are also sub classified as autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive, X-linked dominant, X-linked recessive, Y-linked and mitochondrial. There has been a fair amount of study that has been done on each of these disorders of the genes and each type of disorder has been studied in detail by researchers.

Since the diseases related to these are genetic in nature, there are times that some of the disorders that surface are extremely specific and individualistic in nature. These conditions are called rare genetic diseases. A genetic disorder can also be common and some of the conditions that you may have come across may actually have their origins in the gene structure and you may just not know about the real cause.

Genetic disorder that arises from a single gene that has undergone mutation is called single gene disorders. Sometimes these conditions can occur even when the specific condition does not exist in wither parent. This can mainly happen when the specific gene in question is recessive in the parent but becomes dominant in the off spring. The classification of recessive and dominant genes is not cast in stone and there are times when differences have been observed. These have also been studied at length.

If you see a list of genetic disorders, you will realize that there are many that you may be familiar with. These are dependent on whether the X gene is dominant or recessive for that specific trait that the gene carries. Some X linked disorders have been noted to be more prevalent in men, especially in the case where the mother has one X chromosome that is recessive in nature.

Some of the human genetic disorders are mentioned here. Autosomal dominant – hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer, Huntington’s disease, Marfan Syndrome and Neurofibromatosis 1. Autosomal recessive – cystic fibrosis, spinal muscular atrophy, dry earwax and sickle-cell disease. X-linked dominant – Rett syndrome, incontinentia pigmenti and aircardi syndrome. X-linked recessive – Hemophilia A, red-green color blindness and muscular dystrophy. Y-linked – Male infertility. Mitochondrial – human mitochondrial genetics, and Leber’s hereditary optic neuropathy. The list is by no means exhaustive. It covers a fair number of disorders that humans face that are related to single gene issues.
Other disorders that are related to the gen structure can be more complex and therefore multifactorial in nature. These conditions are associated with various combinations of genes and are therefore difficult to study. While these disorders are also hereditary, they are not easily traced back as the single gene disorders. Due to this specific characteristic, it is difficult to ascertain the level of risk that an individual has based on family history and the past. Some of these have genetic and environmental causes as well that ultimately result in the disease surfacing. Some of the polygenic disorders are asthma, autism, cancers, cleft palate, metal retardation, diabetes, auto immune diseases like multiple sclerosis and more. While we have come a long way with genetics as a study, there are still many genetic disorders that need to be understood and studied.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is basically a chronic disease that is also progressive in nature. It is a condition that is related to the exocrine system of the body. The exocrine system is responsible for all external secretions of the body like mucus, sweat and the like. In the Unites States alone, there are about 30,000 children and adults who suffer from this condition. While it is mainly a disease of the exocrine system, CF also affects the digestive system, the respiratory system and the reproductive system as well. The mucus that is secreted by the exocrine system in various organs and cells in the body is extremely thick and this results in the blockage of various critical passages in the body.

The cystic fibrosis foundation is a non profit foundation that is supported by donors. The main aim of the foundation is to ensure that cystic fibrosis treatment options for the condition continue to be researched. The foundation has 115 care centers, almost a hundred adult care programs and many affiliate programs as well. With a network this wide, the foundation is considered to be an extremely efficient organization and manages funds extremely well. When the foundation was established in 1955, the average age of survival of people afflicted with this condition was extremely low.

The condition is fairly obvious very soon after birth and can be judged by certain specific symptoms. Typical cystic fibrosis symptoms include diarrhea, foul smelling stool, poor growth despite a good appetite, skin that tastes salty, vomiting and frequent bouts of pneumonia and wheezing. In slightly older children, the condition can be diagnosed by noticing symptoms like respiratory infections, cough and fever, abdominal pain and flatulence, malnutrition and poor growth. There are various other conditions that can surface due to CF. These include sinusitis, clubbing of the fingers, nasal polyps, rectal prolapse, late puberty and others.

While there may be many people who still do not know what is cystic fibrosis, there are various tests that have been designed to be able to diagnose the condition. It is amazing that today, the diagnosis of this condition can be done at a prenatal, postnatal and early childhood stage as well. The amniotic fluid is used to perform certain tests and this establishes the diagnosis for CF. Newborns need to undergo a test called immunoreactive trypsinogen test or IRT.

Other very common test that is also used to diagnose CF among children and young adults too is electrolyte sweat test. This is a test where the level of sodium, potassium and chloride is tested in the sweat using the electrolyte method. A chemical called pilocarpine is applied on the skin and an electric current is used. If the levels of sodium and potassium are high, CF is suspected. Other tests used to diagnose cystic fibrosis are chest x-ray, sputum culture test and stool examination.

The adenoma is a certain kind of tumor, however, if you do have one of these tumors, you shouldn’t panic, there is no reason for you to believe this is going to be a mayor complication, since these tumors are mostly benign, however, there are those tumors that could become malignant, and also, there are also some of these tumors which may grow out of proportion, and what will happen is that the person who develops some of these tumors will feel some discomfort, since the enlarged growth of this tumor could put pressure on other organs, affecting their normal functions, and in these and other cases these tumors need to be surgically removed by a doctor.

Some of the problems with this adenomatous may need surgery like stated before, but in many cases not even surgery is an option, since there are people who may develop these tumors, however, their tumors will never turn malignant, and they can live their whole lives with one of these tumors without even noticing. In other cases, doctors prefer to keep a close watch on the tumor if surgery inst necessary.

One of the common cases of this disease is the pituitary adenoma, in other words, this is the tumor that has grown in the pituitary area, or the brain. Most of the cases with this kind of tumor pass by unnoticed, and it is common that people get to develop them, however, there are other times in which the tumor does causes some level of damage, again, treatment and surgery may come handy on those stages of the disease.

Adenomas can grow in many of the organs of the body, and this is a reason why so much campaign for cancer and tumor preventing techniques and prevention is recommended, because some of these tumors, like stated before could become cancer, and once this happens, it could make a person undergo a sever treatment that is going to cause a lot of psychological damage, and it will probably cause this person a lot of tension and stress, since the treatments and surgery could become very exhausting.

There are many kind of this tumor, and it is common for doctors to worry about some of the cases of this disease, and such is the case of breast and also tubular adenoma, since these are two of the most common cases in which the tumor becomes benign, and these could shorten the life expectancy of the sick person.

It is important for people who are over 50 to constantly make visits to the doctor and get a complete scan of their bodies, this will help them in preventing many diseases as well as locating in time any adenoma formation on a patient, this is a good thing to do, since it is possible that a tumor could appear, and even if the doctor suggests it is not a malignant tumor, it could be wise for the patient to keep a close watch on the development of the tumor, and if it grows or not, if it stays the same size, or if its structure could interfere with other organs in the body of the patient, these doctor visits should be performed from 2 times a year to 1.

Rare disorders are conditions that are prevalent in an extremely low proportion of the population and therefore are not extremely well known among the common public. Since there is little known about the condition, the specific conditions can result in a number of visits to the doctor to understand the implications of the condition. This takes a toll on the patient as well the family members since conditions like these are likely to involve lifestyle changes and more. Rare diseases are also sometimes called orphan diseases and these conditions are more likely than not genetic in nature. Since these are genetic, rare diseases are mostly diagnosed relatively early in the life of the patient.

Genetic disorders are those that are caused due to abnormalities in the gene structure or chromosome pattern. Since the condition is based on the specific genetic structure of the afflicted, the genetic disorders tend to be rare and therefore are called rare genetic disorders. These disorders can be single gene disorders, multifactorial or polygenic in nature. Even though these conditions are rare, there are more than 4000 diseases that are associated with a single gene disorder itself, let alone the conditions that are caused by multifactorial gene disorders.

Given the complexity that physicians are grapping with when it comes to such issues, the national organization for rare disorders was founded in 1983 by Abbey Meyers. The American non profit organization aims at supporting patients and families of those who need to face such rare skin disorders and other conditions. Meyers established this organization to help his son who suffered from Tourette Syndrome and while this condition is not a rare disease, it was an orphan drug (drugs that are also used for treatment of rare diseases) that ultimately helped his son recover.

Rare genetic disorder can be avoided by ensuring fetus screening for such issues. It is also important that a newborn be checked for these since early detection can make all the difference to the manner in which the treatment progresses. Since these are rare conditions, past cases that can be referred to are few and far between and therefore the physician needs to learn as he treats and there is a fair amount of trial and error that needs to be accepted by the patient and the family. Additionally since the medicines and treatment options are not available more commonly, there is a fair amount of interaction between physicians and those developing the medication. Pricing of such treatment options becomes an issue that all stakeholders need to grapple with.

There is now some support that Americans can expect to have from institutions that have been built around supporting those who have a rare condition. However, the support available is far lesser than that available for other conditions that are more common. For issues that are common, there are various centers for rehabilitation, family support, counseling and more. On the other hand, people with rare disorders still struggle to find adequate support form the medical fraternity.
